However, despite our best efforts, sometimes the big day can throw us a curveball. Maybe hair and makeup run late, or Uncle Stu goes missing during family photos because he’s off getting himself another drink. These little hiccups can eat into that precious time we’ve set aside for creative couple portraits, and that’s where a solid plan comes into play.
So how do we maintain professionalism and stay calm when so many variables can change at a moment’s notice? The answer is simple: by creating a well-thought-out wedding photography timeline.
Something I often hear from my second shooters is that I’m one of the calmest photographers they’ve worked with. While this is a huge compliment, I’ll admit, it caught me by surprise at first. Why do so many photographers get flustered on the job, and how can we snap back into a calm, confident, and flowing state?

A wedding photography timeline. When I plan a timeline, I’m essentially predicting where things might go wrong and creating a plan to make sure we’re covered. It’s all about anticipating challenges and staying one step ahead, and this is something anyone can do.
Weddings are often unpredictable, but they tend to follow patterns we can prepare for. With a good timeline in place, you can bring a sense of calm to your wedding day—ultimately leading to a better experience for everyone and, of course, better photos!
